Short answer: a QR is for people in front of you; a link is for people who aren't. But since 1 April 2024, two NPCI rules change what works for a personal UPI ID:
- Link and button payments to a personal UPI ID are blocked. The payer may see "This transaction may be risky. For your safety, it can't be completed at this time."
- A QR picked from the phone's gallery is limited to ₹2,000 per payment. The payer sees "You can pay upto 2000 for QRs selected from gallery".
Scanning a QR with the camera and paying to a typed UPI ID aren't affected. So for someone who isn't in front of you, the reliable instruction is: "Pay to my UPI ID." Links and gallery QRs work normally for verified merchant UPI IDs.
The two NPCI rules, in plain words
NPCI's circular OC 76A, dated 12 March 2024 and in force from 1 April 2024, told every UPI app to:
- Disallow "intent" payments between people. An intent payment is one started by tapping a link or button that opens the UPI app with details filled in. They're also disallowed for offline merchants who aren't verified.
- Cap "QR share and pay" at ₹2,000 for payments to people and to unverified merchants. That's the option to pick a QR image from your gallery instead of scanning it.
Both rules make it harder to misuse links and forwarded QR images, which scammers can send to strangers at scale. NPCI repeated them in April 2025.
Verified merchants (businesses onboarded by a bank or payment company with KYC checks) can still use links, buttons and larger gallery-QR payments.
What works for a personal UPI ID
| Situation | What works | What doesn't |
|---|---|---|
| Customer at your counter | They scan your printed QR with the camera | (nothing to worry about) |
| Customer on WhatsApp, under ₹2,000 | QR image from their gallery, or paying to your UPI ID | The link's Pay button may be blocked |
| Customer on WhatsApp, over ₹2,000 | Paying to your UPI ID | Gallery QR (capped at ₹2,000), Pay button (blocked) |
| Customer on a laptop | Scanning the QR on their screen with their phone | Links (no UPI app on a laptop) |
| Customer on an iPhone | Camera scan, or paying to your UPI ID | Links can open an app they didn't choose |
How each one works
A QR is a picture of a payment address. The customer's UPI app reads it through the camera, fills in your details, and asks them to confirm. It works anywhere the code can be seen: a counter, a poster, a bill, a screen across the room.
A raw UPI link starts upi://pay and asks the phone to open a UPI app directly. Many messaging and email apps don't make these clickable, desktops can't open them, and for personal UPI IDs the payment is blocked.
A web link starts https:// and opens a page. ezyupi's payment pages show the amount, your QR, your UPI ID (tap to copy) and a Pay button, so the customer can use whichever route works on their phone.
"UPI payment link not working": the fixes
Work down this list:
- "This transaction may be risky"? The UPI ID is personal and the app is following NPCI's rule. Copy the UPI ID from the page and pay to it, or scan the QR from another screen.
- "You can pay upto 2000 for QRs selected from gallery"? Pay the full amount to the UPI ID instead, or scan the QR with the camera from another screen.
- The link shows as plain text? It's a raw
upi://link. Send a web link or the QR. - Nothing happens on a computer? Laptops have no UPI app. Scan the QR with a phone.
- The payment fails at a large amount? It may be the payer's bank limit, or the ₹5,000 limit for the first 24 hours after setting up UPI.
- Still failing? The bank's servers may be busy. Wait a few minutes; if money left the payer's account but didn't arrive, it's reversed automatically.
Where QRs fail
On the same phone. Nobody can point their camera at their own screen. A QR sent on WhatsApp has to be saved and picked from the gallery, which runs into the ₹2,000 limit.
When printed badly. Too small, glossy, or blurry from a stretched image.
Print a QR that scans first time
When someone covers it. A printed QR can have a sticker pasted over it. Customers who read the name on their screen catch it.
They're the same thing underneath
A UPI QR and a UPI payment link carry identical information: the payee's UPI ID, and optionally a name, an amount and a note. One is drawn as squares, the other written as text. ezyupi makes both from the same details at once.
Use both, sensibly
Shop: QR on the counter for walk-ins; for phone orders, send your UPI ID along with the link.
Tuition teacher: fees above ₹2,000 sent to parents with the line "pay to my UPI ID and write the child's name"; the QR on the classroom wall for anyone paying in person.
Instagram seller: link in bio, QR in stories for orders under ₹2,000; for bigger orders, your UPI ID in the DM.
Invoice: QR printed on it; in the covering message, the invoice number and your UPI ID.
Society: QR on the notice board; a printed slip per flat for maintenance.
Delivery: a QR on the delivery slip for customers paying at the door.
Keeping each one safe
For a QR, laminate it, keep it in sight, and write the name customers will see on the card.
For a link, send it from your own number, and tell regular customers which number you send payment details from.
For both, the customer's last check is the same: the bank-registered name on their own screen, before the PIN.
A standing option
If you send payment details often, a pay page gives you one short web address with your name, timings, price list, QR and UPI ID, which you share once and reuse.
Questions
Why does Google Pay say "This transaction may be risky" on a payment link?
Since 1 April 2024, NPCI has told UPI apps not to complete link or button payments to personal UPI IDs. Pay to the UPI ID directly, or scan the QR with the camera.
Why can't I pay more than ₹2,000 from a QR in my gallery?
NPCI caps gallery-QR payments at ₹2,000 for personal UPI IDs and unverified merchants. Scan the QR with the camera from another screen, or pay to the UPI ID.
Is a UPI QR better than a payment link?
For a personal UPI ID, yes in most cases: camera scans have no special limit. For a verified merchant, both work.
Do they carry the same information?
Yes. The UPI ID, plus an optional name, amount and note.
Why isn't my UPI link clickable on WhatsApp?
It's probably a raw upi:// link, which many apps don't make clickable. Send a web link, the QR or your UPI ID.
Does a payment link work on a laptop?
Not by itself. Include the QR so they can scan it with their phone.
Does an ezyupi payment link expire?
No, but it opens a page on ezyupi.com, so it needs our site to be online. A QR doesn't depend on us at all.
UPI link kaam kyun nahi kar raha?
1 April 2024 se NPCI ke niyam ke mutabik UPI apps personal UPI ID par link ya button se payment block karti hain, isliye "This transaction may be risky" dikhta hai. Seedha UPI ID par payment kijiye, ya QR ko kisi doosri screen par khol kar apne phone ke camera se scan kijiye. Gallery se QR chunne par ₹2,000 tak hi payment hota hai.
