Paste a UPI ID here to check its format and its handle before you print it on a hundred cards. The check runs in your browser, and nothing is looked up.
What it checks
The format. A UPI ID is something@handle. The checker flags a missing @, two of them, characters that aren't allowed, a full stop at the end of the handle (@ybl.) and email addresses ([email protected]), and removes spaces from a paste. After the @, a handle is letters and digits only. The one exception is a bank account written as [email protected]. The format check can't tell a typo from a real handle it doesn't know, which is what the handle check is for.
The handle. Whether the part after the @ is a handle we know, and which app and bank it belongs to. @okhdfcbank is Google Pay through HDFC Bank; @okhdfcbnk comes up as unknown, which is your clue that it's a typo. When an unknown handle is one letter away from one we know, such as @yb1 or @okssbi, the checker suggests the real one. If yours comes up unknown, compare it letter by letter with your UPI app.
What it can't check: whether the ID exists, or whose it is. Only a UPI app talking to the bank can tell you that, and it does so at the moment you pay.
What a valid UPI ID looks like
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
Exactly one @ | rakesh@okhdfcbank |
Letters and numbers before the @ | 9876543210@ybl |
A dot, hyphen or underscore before the @ is allowed by some apps | rakesh.sharma@oksbi |
| No spaces anywhere | not rakesh @ybl |
Letters and digits only after the @, no dots | not [email protected] |
A real handle after the @ | @ybl, @oksbi, @ptyes |
A special case: an address ending in .ifsc.npci, such as [email protected], is a bank account number and IFSC written as a UPI address.
Common mistakes
| Typed | Meant | What went wrong | The checker |
|---|---|---|---|
rakesh@ yb l | rakesh@ybl | Spaces from a copy-paste | Removes the spaces |
rakesh@ybl. | rakesh@ybl | A full stop from the end of a sentence | Invalid |
9876543210@yb1 | 9876543210@ybl | The number one instead of the letter l | Unknown handle, suggests @ybl |
rakesh@okssbi | rakesh@oksbi | A doubled letter | Unknown handle, suggests @oksbi |
rakesh@okhdfc | rakesh@okhdfcbank | A shortened handle | Unknown handle |
[email protected] | rakesh@okhdfcbank | An email address, not a UPI ID | Invalid |
That last one is common. An email address has the same shape, but it isn't a UPI ID and won't receive money, so the checker marks it invalid. A handle it doesn't know isn't an error, because new handles appear, so treat "unknown handle" as a prompt to check every letter.
Copy it, don't type it
The surest way to get your UPI ID right is not to type it at all. Open your UPI app, go to your profile, and use the copy button next to your UPI ID. Paste it here.
If you're reading it out to someone, spell the handle letter by letter. "Y, B, L" leaves less room for error than "ybl".
Where to find your UPI ID in each app
Why we don't show whose ID it is
We deliberately don't check whether a UPI ID exists or show the name behind it. A public tool that does that for anyone is exactly what someone with a list of stolen UPI IDs would want, because it tells them which are live and whose they are.
Your own UPI app already does that check safely: it shows the bank-registered name when you're about to pay, to you, for a payment you chose to make.
The check that proves it
Make a QR from the ID and scan it with your own UPI app. Don't send anything; just scan. The app looks up the ID and shows the bank-registered name.
If that name is right, the ID is right. If the app can't find it, or shows a name you don't recognise, something is mistyped. It takes ten seconds; do it before printing.
Questions
How do I check if a UPI ID is correct?
Check the format here, then make a QR from it and scan it with your own UPI app. The app shows the bank-registered name, which confirms it.
UPI ID check kaise kare?
UPI ID yahan paste kijiye; ye format aur handle check karta hai, jaise @ybl ya @oksbi sahi hai ya nahi. Pakka karne ke liye usi ID se QR banaiye aur apni UPI app se scan kijiye. App bank wala naam dikhayegi; naam sahi hai to ID sahi hai. PIN daalne ki zaroorat nahi.
Can I find out who owns a UPI ID?
Not from this page, and not from any site that hands it out freely. Your UPI app shows the bank-registered name when you're about to pay, which is where that check belongs.
Can I find the account number or phone number from a UPI ID?
No. A UPI ID doesn't reveal the bank account number, and apps show the account holder's name, not their number. The only exception: if the UPI ID is a phone number, like 9876543210@ybl, you can read it.
My UPI ID says invalid. What now?
Look for a full stop at the end, or an email domain such as gmail.com after the @. If it says "unknown handle" instead, check it character by character against your UPI app, or copy it from the app. Handles are easy to misremember: @oksbi, not @okssbi; @ybl, not @yb1.
Can a UPI ID have a dot or a hyphen?
Some apps allow a dot, hyphen or underscore before the @. It depends on the app or bank that issued it.
Is an email address a UPI ID?
No. It looks similar but can't receive UPI payments, and the checker marks it invalid.
Does checking a UPI ID here tell anyone?
No. The check runs in your browser and nothing is looked up or saved.
